When Is Too Early to Go Bare?

The New York TimesLetter to the Editor section had some interesting debates going on the other day, regarding what age you should start encouraging modesty in your children, and make them wear clothes when running around the house.

Basically, the two arguments can be summed up like this:

1. “Parents should encourage modesty, which usually starts around ages 4 to 6.”

2. “There is nothing like innocent children having fun and feeling free. Give them this, and as they grow older, they become more confident in themselves.”

There’s nothing transgressive about nudity except what society opposes upon us. That being said, it’s usually a pretty good idea to cover up until your college years; all the better to shock them with when you decide to shed your clothes and go streaking without mom and dad’s permission. Take that, $40,000 education!
